This unit will emphasize employing research skills to learn about a new culture. Students will engage in a robust research project in which they further investigate different aspects of Chinese culture, both independently and in cooperative learning groups. Students will learn valuable tools in identifying credible sources on the internet as they delve into their projects. As they read the memoir of a self proclaimed unwanted daughter, Chinses Cinderella, by Adeline Yen Mah, students will take into a count the contrast and disparity of the culture in which Adeline grew up. Students will emerse themselves in Chinese culture and employ technology thoughtfully to enhance their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language use. They will tailor their searches online to acquire useful information efficiently, and they integrate what they learn using technology with what they learn offline. Students will present their findings to their peers in engaging, large group discussions.
