This text will be the focus of our ELA 8 Academic classes, "working with textual evidence" unit.
Students will read Wilson Rawls classic novel, Where the Red Fern Grows. As they read, students will identify themes and develop their argument writing skills through scaffolded writing lessons. Throughout the unit, students will analyze key quotes from the novel that reflect the overarching themes. They will need to identify and differentiate the strongest supporting evidence to back up their claims. An emphasis will be placed on their ability to "read between the lines" and identify implicit and inferred information in order to draw their own conclusions. This unit will incorporate multiple mediums for students to work with in developing skills.

Where the Red Fern Grows
After leaving work one afternoon, Billy Coleman spots a Redbone Coonhound in a fight with other neighborhood dogs. He chases the latter away and helps it recover from its wounds. When it is feeling stronger again, he realizes he must set it free, knowing that it will find its way home. This event makes him revisit his past, and the two Redbone Coonhounds he owned when he was a boy in the Ozarks. Billy Colman roams the Ozarks of northeastern Oklahoma with his bluetick hound and his precious coonhound pup trying to "tree" the elusive raccoon. In time, the inseparable trio wins the coveted gold cup in the annual coon-hunt contest, captures the wily ghost coon, and bravely fights with a mountain lion. How will the fight end? Lets read!
