This will be the first group of texts as part of our close reading unit. Students will read multiple short stories from Walter Dean Myers', 145th Street Short Stories collection. An emphasis will be placed on text annotation and identifying central ideas and author's purpose. Throughout the unit students will be expected to identify mood and tone, as well as the role of the setting on the story. Additionally, students will be asked to decode sophisticated vocabulary and use context clues identify meaning.
145th Street
A gritty yet, enchantingly honest collection of stories set on one block of 145th Street in Harlem, NY. We get to know the oldest resident; the cop on the beat; Peaches and her girl, Squeezie. We also meet Angela, and most intriguing, Big Joe, who wants a bang-up funeral while he's still around to enjoy it. Some of these stories are private, and some are the stories behind the headlines. In each one, characters jump off the page and pull readers right into the mix on 145th.
